Short answer: A gym needs its change rooms, showers, toilets, floors and equipment touch points cleaned regularly and thoroughly, ideally outside opening hours so members walk into a fresh space. F&L Cleaning Solutions cleans gyms and fitness studios after hours, weekly or more often, with our own equipment and products. Your first clean is free.
Why gym cleaning is its own job
A gym isn't an office. People sweat, share equipment, walk barefoot in change rooms and use the showers. That creates a few specific cleaning needs.
Change rooms and showers. Tinea (which includes athlete's foot) is a contagious fungal skin infection. Health information services note it can spread by skin contact or indirectly through towels, clothes and floors[1]. Change room and shower floors, where people walk barefoot, are exactly the kind of surface that matters. Regular cleaning of shower and change room floors is part of keeping those areas pleasant and hygienic.
Shared touch points. Equipment handles, benches, mats and door handles are touched by many people every day. National infection-control guidance for healthcare puts particular weight on frequently touched surfaces[2]. A gym isn't a hospital, but the same common-sense idea applies: the surfaces most people touch need the most regular attention.
Wet floors. Showers, water fountains and sweaty floors make slips a real risk. Safe Work Australia lists wet and contaminated floors as common slip hazards[3]. Cleaning after hours means floors are dry by the time members arrive.
Facilities duty. Like any workplace, gym operators must keep toilets, washing and eating facilities clean for workers[4][5]. Members expect the same.
What a regular gym clean covers
We agree the list at the walkthrough. A typical after-hours gym clean includes:
Change rooms, showers and toilets - cleaning toilets, basins and showers - cleaning benches and the outside of lockers - mopping floors.
Training floor - wiping agreed equipment touch points such as handles, benches and machine grips - wiping ledges and reception touch points - mopping hard floors and vacuuming soft floors - emptying bins.
Reception and staff areas - wiping the reception counter and touch points - cleaning the staff kitchen and bathroom.
Members should still wipe down equipment after each use. That's normal gym etiquette and most gyms provide spray and wipes for it. Our job is the deeper, regular clean when the gym is closed.
Rubber floors and specialist surfaces
Many gyms have rubber flooring, turf or specialist surfaces. These need the right method and products, so we'll look at your floors at the walkthrough and agree how they're cleaned. If your flooring manufacturer has care instructions, share them with us and we'll follow them.
Why after hours
Most gyms are busiest early in the morning and after work. Cleaning when the gym is closed, or in the quietest period if you're open long hours, means no mopping around members, no closed change rooms at peak time and dry floors when people arrive. We follow your access and alarm procedures every visit.
24-hour gyms
If your gym is open around the clock, there's no time when it is fully closed. In that case we work in your quietest hours and keep wet areas clearly signed while we clean. We'll agree the best time at the walkthrough.
How often?
Busy gyms often choose a clean every day or most days, because change rooms and showers get heavy use. Smaller studios with lighter use may start with fewer visits. We only do regular cleaning, weekly or more often, and we'll suggest a frequency based on member numbers, classes and facilities.
What we'll ask at the walkthrough
To set up a routine that suits your gym, we'll ask about your opening hours and busiest times, how many members and classes you run, how many showers, toilets and change rooms you have, what flooring you use and which equipment touch points you want included. We'll also ask how you'd like us to get in and out so we can follow your access and alarm procedures. From there we suggest a frequency and give you one flat monthly price.
